Book Club 2025

My book club met last night for our first meeting of 2025. We read Like Mother, Like Mother by Susan Reiger. The 8 of us gave it an average rating of 3.61 out of 5.

Cover art by Kelsey Howard. I purchased this book at Cellar Bird Books in Grand Rapids, MI and plan to add it to my Little Free Library.

Highlights:

  • Interesting narratives around matrilineage and generational trauma

  • The mental load/domestic labor that women carry in addition to physically carrying babies; maternal mental health; domestic abuse

  • Women pursuing demanding career paths; work-life balance, priorities, marriage, family relationships

  • “Family”, both blood-related and not

  • The drama that genetic testing can uncover

We did agree that the book was a bit heavy during a sub-zero gray January in Michigan, but overall, we enjoyed reading it.

Book club traditions that I appreciate:

  • Gorgeous, delicious cakes made by one of our own—this one celebrating the number of pages read in 2024 (3,836)

  • A solid snack spread

  • A Polaroid selfie of the group, given to that month’s host
